    Daniel Shea - [photography]

Daniel Shea is a photographer based out of Chicago. In the summer of 2007, he began shooting a body of work examining the coal industry in Appalachia. What started as an interest in the modern coal mining process known as mountaintop removal quickly evolved into an extensive study of the social/political institutions surrounding these practices. Above all else, he became interested in surveying the cultural implications of extracting coal from Appalachian Mountains. The result was the Removing Mountains series, which shows the life conditions of the people in Appalachian Mountains. He is currently shooting and editing a project in Southeast Ohio. As a follow up to Removing Mountains, he aims to explore the coal-burning end of this industry, where coal is transformed into energy.
